Call to arms

MAYBE it is time to arm the police as a matter of course, says Richard Littlejohn (Mail), but there is no maybe about it.

Only four other major countries don’t arm their police, apart from specialist units: Ireland, Norway, Iceland and New Zealand. And Iceland trains all its officers in the use of firearms.

Politicians and senior police officers won’t admit things have got so bad with terrorism and criminality that we need to fully arm the police. A large number of officers don’t even carry Tasers. ROGER BIRTWISTLE, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
