ITV fury as Epsom silence Chapman
ITV RacIng betting expert Matt chapman, who divides opinion like no other member of the team, was stood down from commentating on the Derby presentation in front of the Queen.
Epsom had been annoyed at the irreverent approach the often irritating chapman brought to the role after the Oaks the previous day.
chapman welcomed Oaks-winning trainer John gosden to the stage after Enable’s victory by declaring: ‘Here’s Johnny g!’ — completely the wrong tone for such an occasion.
Epsom’s gripe with chapman led to him being replaced by racecourse announcer Martin Kelly for the Derby ceremony, even though ITV’s contract states they can choose their own announcer for the big race prize-giving.
ITV were understood to be displeased about the switch because they want to bring more theatre to the presentations.
coincidentally clare Balding, who was the Derby and Oaks presentation announcer in her former role as channel 4’s racing anchor, is a newlyappointed member of the Epsom board who disapproved of chapman’s approach.
Royal ascot is the next big meeting, but ITV have no influence over trophy presentations there. ITV are standing by chapman and will involve him in future ceremonies.
