Another border farce
WE have become only too familiar with stories about how easy it is for people to enter this country illegally – in the backs of lorries, on inflatable boats, even walking 30 miles through the Channel tunnel.
Now, we discover, it’s just as easy to exit illegally, even if you’re a wanted criminal. Shaid Luqman, suspected of masterminding Britain’s biggest banking fraud, was able to flee from Manchester Airport to Pakistan despite being electronically tagged and having had his passport confiscated.
One of the main reasons people voted for Brexit is that it enables us to regain control of our borders. But what use is that unless frontier guards are capable of keeping a proper check on who’s coming in and who’s going out?
