While many regard the hackneyed catcalls from building sites an anachronis­tic bore (some councils have even gone so far as to class them as a hate crime), many more admit to a moment of sadness when the silence finally and gradually sets in.

EVE POLLARD, one of the UK’s first women newspaper editors and a proud feminist, this week lamented the moment she knew she wasn’t turning heads any more.
