Picture of kindness spreading goodwill on the web

- By Alex Ward

IT was a show of unity and compassion that touched the hearts of thousands.

After an elderly woman bumped her head on a double-decker bus and collapsed, a Muslim woman rushed over to comfort her.

As others called 999, the caring woman, who was wearing a niqab, the Muslim veil, left her shopping on a nearby seat, crouched down and clasped the 84-year-old’s hand for 20 minutes until paramedics arrived.

A photograph of her kindness was posted on Facebook with the caption ‘this is the real Islam’.

It comes after the attack on London Bridge by three Islamist extremists and the bombing of Manchester Arena. The photo has since been shared tens of thousands of times, prompting widespread praise.

One user, Bethany Roberts, wrote: ‘Love this. People need to realise that the terrorists are not Muslim. Real Muslims are actually such a lovely community of people.’ Jordan Mortlock wrote: ‘Love it when a community can come together as one.’

The drama is believed to have taken place on a bus from Ilford to Barking, in east London, on Wednesday. The pensioner’s condition is not known.
