FOUR WAYS TO BEAT WAWRINKA...

- MIKE DICKSON

PLAY HIGH TO HIS BACKHAND Last year Murray used his forehand to loop the ball back deep towards Wawrinka’s single hander, taking him out of his favoured strike zone. The Scot must force him back or wide, then hit hard or play a drop shot.

HIT CONSISTENTLY DEEP Few players can pulverise a short, mid-court ball in the manner of the barrel-chested Swiss. Murray must keep his returns deep so Wawrinka does not control the rally from the start. The conditions will be quicker than this time last year in the cold and the gloom, making Wawrinka’s groundstrokes even more lethal.

MIX UP THE SERVE Wawrinka favours the blocked return of serve, rather than taking a huge swing. This often works well against big servers but will give Murray the chance to throw in a serve-volley and use his under-rated net game.

DEFEND SECOND SERVE An area of concern for Murray. Wawrinka has been the fifth best player this fortnight in winning points on his second serve. Murray is down in 18th position with 64 per cent. He has to put enough power or spin on the second serve to avoid it getting crushed.
