New hope for baby Charlie at European court

-

DOCTORS treating terminally- ill baby Charlie Gard were ordered to keep him on life support yesterday while judges in Strasbourg consider his case.

His parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, launched a final legal challenge at the European Court of Human Rights to ask to take the 10-month-old to America for experimental treatment.

His parents say he is getting stronger but the Supreme Court ruled that such treatment would not be in Charlie’s best interests and he should be allowed to die. His doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London say he has no prospect of recovery and it is ‘unethical’ to keep him alive.

His life support is to continue until midnight on Tuesday to give the judges time to consider the case. Charlie, pictured, has suffered brain damage and has a rare genetic disorder that saps energy from his muscles and organs.
