Bangladesh have semis in sight after famous win

- By RICHARD GIBSON at Sophia Gardens

HUNDREDS from Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah helped Bangladesh pull off the biggest Champions Trophy shock yet by dumping New Zealand out of the tournament. Returning to Cardiff, the scene of one of their country’s most famous wins — the toppling of Australia in 2005 — the Bangladeshis are now within touching distance of the semi-finals. Mashrafe Mortaza’s team appeared destined for Group A’s wooden spoon when New Zealand reduced them to 33 for four, chasing 266 to win. However, the centurions combined in Bangladesh’s maiden 200-plus ODI stand, propelling them to a five-wicket victory. A James Neesham over that cost 13 runs altered the dynamic of the contest. And then, another 13-run over, sent down by Kane Williamson, persuaded the Bangladesh fans that another Welsh heist was on. And if England avoid defeat by Australia today, the Tigers will be in the semi-finals.
