Farewell to pineapple pizza pioneer
THE man who invented the Hawaiian pizza has died, aged 83. Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant to Canada, was responsible for the idea that has split pizza fans across the world — adding pineapple to the Italian speciality. ‘We put it on, just for the fun of it,’ he said, and served it at his restaurant in Ontario. The trend caught on — but it has never been appreciated in the birthplace of the pizza, Naples, where the addition of tropical fruit is considered sacrilege.
