You can’t hurry love when dating online

-

I UNDERSTAND why Edwina Currie felt disturbed after her foray into the world of online dating (Mail). Many mature women, myself included, can identify with her observation that a lot of male ‘silver surfers’ are looking only for one thing. But when women like me are encouraged to be ‘Sexy at Sixty’ and ‘Sensational at Seventy’, should we be so critical of these men? Are they simply offering what they think we are looking for? Mature women lament the fact they might be older in years, but they still feel young in their head, and, of course, men feel the same. Unfortunately, when these young-at-heart men hit the dating websites, they use the wrong tactics to impress Miss Right and turn most of us right off. However, perhaps we potential Miss Rights should take some of the blame. Let’s be honest, if follically challenged 62-year-old Brian from Bristol made a saucy suggestion in his profile, we’d feel queasy and press delete. But if 62-year-old Kevin Costner from California suggested the same thing, we’d be swooning. Despite the notion that it’s all about what’s inside rather than how they look, women won’t be impressed by a picture of a man in saggy jogging bottoms and a slogan T-shirt. Put him in a smart suit and the outcome might be different. So come on, all you silver fox online daters, sharpen up and be a little more realistic with your expectations. There are plenty of fabulous, mature ladies who would like to have a coffee or leisurely lunch with you. And if there’s a spark … Stop trying to rush things: surely you know the best things in life are worth waiting for. JANE WALTERS, Kelvedon, Essex.
