They won in Toulon, too

- SAM CUNNINGHAM

ENGLAND’S victorious Toulon tournament manager Neil Dewsnip hopes the success of his side in the South of France will encourage the players’ clubs to pick them more often.

Dewsnip moulded together a squad made of Under 20s, 19s and 18s on the fringes of their national age group teams. They stunned their opponents to retain the trophy won by Gareth Southgate’s Under 21s last year.

MailOnline yesterday revealed the statistics that show England players under the age of 21 are getting barely any game time in the Premier League compared to their major European rivals.

Following an unexpected 5-3 penalty shootout victory in the final against Ivory Coast Under 20s, Dewsnip said: ‘They’ve just beaten a team who have quite a lot of French Ligue 1 players in it.

‘That’s got to send a message to our managers and coaches back home. There are some good players who just happen to be 18, 19, 20 — please consider picking them more often.

‘It’s a passion of mine, but I’m only part of a bigger passion with the England staff, we’re determined to do as well as we can.

‘Not only is this win good for England, I think all the youth coaches in the country should celebrate this victory. It shows the depth of talent in our country.’
