5 of the best SLICED LOAVES

- MANDY FRANCIS

SLICED bread sales have tumbled this year but Kaitlin Colucci, of the British Dietetic Association, says it can be healthier than you think. Here are her five of the best …

Kingsmill Hi Fibre White

£1 for 750g, supermarkets. Per slice: calories, 82; saturated fat, 0.2g; sugar, 1.1g; fibre, 2.6g; salt, 0.35g OFFICIAL advice is that adults need at least 30g of fibre a day. Wholemeal bread is a good source but if you’re not keen on the taste, this is a good alternative, thanks to the extra wheat fibre and psyllium husks. Per gram, this white bread has slightly more fibre than most wholemeal loaves. Calorie-wise it’s slightly lower than many rivals.

Hi-Lo Seeded Wholemeal

£1.75 for 400g, Sainsbury’s and Ocado. Per slice: calories, 86; saturated fat, 0.4g; sugar, 1.1g; fibre, 3.4g; salt, 0.31g WITH a high proportion of sunflower seeds, linseeds and poppy seeds (16 per cent) and added wheat and soya protein, this bread has twice as much protein as most, so it will help you feel fuller for longer. It has about 65 per cent less carbohydrate than white bread and so will help prevent sudden peaks in blood sugar levels. It is also packed with fibre.

Weight Watchers Soft White Danish

95p for 400g, supermarkets. Per slice: calories, 50; saturated fat, 0.1g; sugar, 0.5g; fibre 0.5g; salt, 0.2g WITH its light, aerated texture, this loaf has half the calories of normal bread per slice. It is also fortified with calcium, iron and B vitamins. It is very low in sugar and saturated fat, too, although there’s less fibre than in wholegrain.

Schneider Brot Vollkornbrot Sliced Rye

£1 for 500g, Tesco. Per slice: calories, 100; saturated fat, 0.05; sugar, 1.1g; fibre, 3.85g; salt, 0.5g WHEAT and dairy-free but not gluten-free, this bread is very high in fibre as it’s made with wholekernel rye grains. Two slices provide 7.7g of fibre — 25 per cent of your daily needs. A simple bread with lots of flavour, it is quite high in salt.

Burgen Gluten, Wheat and Dairy Free Soya and Linseed Bread

£2.75 for 500g, Tesco. Per slice: calories, 120; saturated fat, 0.4g; sugar, 1.4g; fibre, 3.4g; salt, 0.39g THIS is a good choice if you have to avoid gluten and other ingredients. With 7 per cent linseeds, two slices will provide 16 per cent of your daily fibre, around 13 per cent of the protein you need and 70 per cent of the omega 3 fatty acids.
