For JAMs, May was toast

-

THE election was a golden opportunity for Theresa May to reach out and secure the votes of tens of thousands of the JAMs — just about managing — like me, who feel aggrieved by years of cuts and austerity.

Did she do anything to counteract the massive bonuses for bankers? Did she offer any redress to the public sector workers and nurses who have effectively suffered pay cuts? Did she offer any compensation to the thousands of women, like my wife, who have had up to six years of their pensions stolen from them? No, she did not.

Her disastrous manifesto sought to clobber the pensioners who have been the mainstay of Tory votes.

There was no mention of the fact that despite being the fifth largest economy in the world, we have a housing crisis, a health service crisis, an elderly care crisis and nearly a million people on zero-hours contracts. With Jeremy Corbyn breathing hard down their necks, it is time for the Tories to think about the many rather than the few.

DAVID ROLL, Cardiff. IF THERESA May wanted to strengthen her hand for the Brexit negotiations, why didn’t she get the support of the DUP to start with and so avoid calling a General Election?
