NOW THAT’S A FAMILY TREE!

Mum trims hedge...and son and partner are preserved in privet

- By Claire Duffin

PROUD parents typically have photos of their children hanging on their walls.

But one mum has gone a step further and has trimmed a 12ft golden privet hedge into the shape of her son’s head.

Michelle Foley’s topiary is in the front garden of her home in Birmingham for all to see. She is proud of her creation, although admits son Brennan Black, 21, is less so. ‘Brennan likes it but doesn’t think it looks much like him,’ she said. ‘Although when the glasses are on I’m sure it will.’

Miss Foley intends to create his glasses using bits of old plastic and attach them to the front for a true likeness.

The 48-year-old art graduate said she came up with the idea of shaping her hedges into family faces when she noticed they needed a tidy up.

She has also made one of her partner, Andrew Batterham, 51, which is in the back garden, and is working on one of her daughter, Scarlet-Rose Black, 18.

The keen artist often produces traditional sculptures. She said she saw the need to tidy up her hedge growth as the perfect excuse to take her artistic talent outside.

‘I did an art degree where all my work revolved around heads,’ she said. ‘I’m really interested in gardening too so when I had to cut my hedges it only seemed natural that heads came out.’
