HOW TV REF MADE HISTORY

THIS was the first time the video assistant referee was used in an England match — and technology was called into action for the decision to send off Raphael Varane. The VAR can be used to review goals where a violation or offside was missed in the build-up, penalty decisions, red cards and cases of mistaken identity. Referee Davide Massa pointed to the spot after Varane clipped Dele Alli before checking with the VAR back-up. Varane was adjudged to not have attempted to play the ball and after a one-minute delay, Massa brandished the red card (above).
