Survivors ‘have no insurance’
MANY survivors of the Grenfell Tower blaze may face financial ruin because they did not have contents insurance, it is feared.
Most of those who lived there are council residents on low incomes.
As the owner of the freehold, the the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is responsible for providing buildings insurance.
But all residents, many of whom saw their possessions destroyed, are responsible for buying their own contents insurance.
James Daley, a finance expert and local councillor, said: ‘Lots of these people will be on fairly low incomes and probably aren’t insured.
‘Hopefully we’ll see the local community coming together and insurers showing compassion.’ The council’s insurance should pay for their short-term rehousing.
