Missing grandmother lived there for 40 years

-

AN 84-year-old woman who has lived at Grenfell Tower for more than 40 years is among those missing, feared dead.

Sheila Smith is thought to have lived in the block since it was built in 1974 and raised her two sons there.

The grandmother has not been seen since the fire and her family have said they now fear the worst.

Her son Adam, 50, who lives in Illinois, flew in to join his brother Martyn, 62, in their search.

He said they had scoured hospitals and refuge centres but had not found her. Adam Smith wrote in a message on Facebook: ‘Today on site has been seriously traumatic but I’ve witnessed first-hand the effect of a com- munity coming together like you wouldn’t believe – a community in North Kensington that I was at the heart of 30 years ago studying and working, when I lived in Grenfell Tower with Mum.’

He added: ‘With a heavy heart I have to say I fear the worst: there’s no sign of Mum and I’m pretty sure she’s still in her flat in Grenfell Tower. I’ve formally registered with the police and all we can do is wait.

Earlier Mr Smith had appealed on Twitter for information about his mother and posted a picture of her.

A close friend of Mrs Smith’s, poet Gary Allen, responded and said: ‘Absolutely shocked. I prayed she wasn’t there. Thinking of you.’
