Man under 35 driving a Honda in Brighton is most likely to crash

IF you are in Brighton enjoying the sun this weekend, beware of young men driving Honda cars.

Apparently this is the most dangerous combination on the road.

For a man aged under 35 driving a Honda in the seaside town is most likely to crash their car, police figures reveal. The findings emerged in analysis of 129,986 incidents recorded in 2016 that showed the genders, places and makes of car most frequently involved in crashes.

The figures add weight to the idea that men are more dangerous drivers than women, experts say. Men had double the number of accidents as women last year. They were involved in 87,407 crashes compared to 38,757 for women. Men were also involved in twice as many drink driving incidents as women.

Experts say men are more likely to have an accident because they are on the roads more often and typically drive longer distances.

There are also more men who drive for a living.

Ian Crowder, an insurance expert for the AA, said: ‘As a rule men are more confident drivers and take more risks. If there is a small gap in the traffic at a roundabout they are more likely to floor it to get into the gap. Women on the other hand are more risk adverse and more likely to wait for a larger gap.

‘Young men are also more likely to have catastrophic crashes, where women are more likely to have a prang in a supermarket car park.’ When it comes to age, drivers under 35 had the most crashes, according to the analysis by towbar manufacturing firm Witter Towbars.

They accounted for 23 per cent of accidents, despite there being fewer motorists of this age on the road. Next worse were those aged between 36 and 45, who made up 20 per cent of incidents.

The age group that experienced the fewest number of crashes was 56 to 65. They were involved in only 11 per cent of crashes, despite making up over 30 per cent of licensed drivers.

Some models of cars were also involved in more crashes than others. People driving Hondas had the most accidents as a proportion of registered cars on the road, with one in 146 motorists involved in a crash. There is nothing to suggest this had anything to do with the car itself.

Those driving Fiats had the best record followed by Mini drivers.

Of individual cities, drivers in Brighton had the most crashes as a proportion of its population, with one in 200 involved in a crash. It was followed by Nottingham and Newcastle Upon Tyne with one in 336 and one in 348 respectively.

Manchester had the best record with only one in every 3,527 involved in a crash.

A spokesman for Honda said: ‘ Honda cars have a strong suite of safety products and driver aids.’

He said all cars achieved five-star safety ratings.
