Conteh pleased as punch with reward at last
JOHN CONTEH, who held the WBC light-heavyweight title from 1974 to 1978, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to boxing and charity. The 66-year-old Liverpudlian joked: ‘I never thought about getting an honour — where I grew up the only letters you got were from the DHSS. I’m really appreciative of the people who have supported me.’ In other honours, Judy Murray, the former Great Britain Fed Cup coach, has been awarded an OBE for services to tennis, women in sport and charity. Her reward follows son Andy being knighted earlier this year and her other son Jamie receiving an OBE last year. Double Olympic rowing champion Heather Stanning, who retired after defending her title in Rio last summer, has been upgraded to an OBE. Ireland rugby captain Rory Best and Dick Greenwood, the former England rugby union captain and coach, have both received OBEs.
