MICHAEL O’NEILL

ANOTHER international week of modest England football should not overlook fine results for Wales in Serbia and, in particular, Northern Ireland in Azerbaijan. Their 1-0 win means they are second in a group containing Germany and the Czech Republic, with four wins from six. O’Neill (above) is a manager getting the best — and more — from what he has. When was the last time we said that about an England coach?

STEVE STRICKER

THE US veteran (right) helped to design Erin Hills, venue for this week’s US Open, but when he wrote to the US PGA for a place in the field they said no. So Stricker went straight to qualifying, shot 65 and 67 and won a place in the field at a venue in his home state of Wisconsin. Stricker is 50 now but the competitive spirit still burns.

PAUL POGBA

THE Manchester United midfielder did not have a great season but it was always probable his second would be better once he had a summer of rest. Pogba (above), who came to United after France’s long Euro 2016 campaign, was superb against England and if I were Jose Mourinho I would tell the 24-year-old I didn’t want to see him until at least the end of July.
