Tammy’s big pay-day loan

- MATT BARLOW

CLUBS interested in signing teenage Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham on loan have been stunned to learn the financial demands stretch far in excess of his basic wage. Chelsea do not want a loan fee for the 19-year-old and insist the priority is to find the best place for him to develop, ideally in the Premier League, after he scored 26 goals on loan at Bristol City last season. They have a new deal lined up for Abraham (right) thought to be worth £50,000 a week, which is ready to be signed before he is loaned out again. Newcastle and Brighton lead the scramble but have been told they must pay an additional £1million to cover signing-on fees for the player, family and agent. Abraham’s agent, Neil Fewings of Wasserman Media Group, has also been trying to negotiate a weekly wage above £50,000 for the player along with a lucrative goal bonus. Fewings also represents Chelsea target Virgil van Dijk, the Southampton centre half at the centre of allegations of an illegal approach from Liverpool. The additional demands have put off some clubs and may end Brighton’s interest. WMG insist it is standard practice to include an agent’s fee in any transfer. Chelsea know about the extras being discussed but have raised no objection. It can be argued, however, that the additional financial demands might make it more difficult to find the perfect place to nurture such an exciting young player. Abraham, with England at the European Under 21 Championship in Poland, was one of three Chelsea players to start yesterday’s 0-0 draw with holders Sweden. He vowed to put his future on hold until the tournament. ‘I hope it will be in the Premier League. I need to reach the next level. That’s the type of person I am.’
