TV Hammond has a guardian angel, says wife

THE wife of TV presenter Richard Hammond says her husband has a ‘guardian angel’ after escaping death in a horrific car smash for a second time.

Mindy Hammond, 46, flew to be at his bedside in Switzerland last week after he careered off a hillside into a field in an electric-powered supercar while filming for Amazon’s The Grand Tour.

The 47-year-old former Top Gear star escaped the wreckage of the Rimac Concept One car seconds before it went up in flames on June 10. He needed reconstructive surgery on his fractured left knee.

Hammond later apologised to his wife and two daughters, Izzy, 16, and Willow, 13, for putting them through more trauma. His previous horrific crash was in 2006 when he flipped a car at 318mph while filming for Top Gear, leaving him with life-threatening head injuries.

Writing in the Sunday Express, Mrs Hammond said: ‘The girls have borne it well; we will go forward with a sense of humour and positivity; with enormous gratitude to that busy guardian angel who stepped in once more. Most of us are fortunate to escape looking death in the face. Richard has done it twice – and that’s two times too many.’

In March it emerged that Hammond was left unconscious after falling from a motorbike in Mozambique.
