PORSCHE won the Le Mans 24 Hours with a last-to-first performanc­e in a race of retirement­s. After axle problems on Saturday, Porsche’s second-string car, driven by German Timo Bernhard and New Zealanders Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber, came through from being 22 laps adrift.

MARK CAVENDISH narrowly missed out on his first win since illness on the final stage of the Tour of Slovenia. Cavendish had been sidelined with glandular fever since the middle of March, but showed that some of his form was returning ahead of the Tour de France when the Manxman narrowly lost in the uphill finish to Ireland’s Sam Bennett.

CANADA’S Andre De Grasse showed he could be a challenge to Usain Bolt at the London World Championsh­ips this summer when he ran 9.69sec to win the 100metres in Stockholm, albeit assisted by a strong wind. ‘It was a shock when I saw the time,’ said De Grasse, who also won the 100m in Oslo on Thursday.
