Why has Capaldi quit? He’s bored being the Doctor

- By Laura Lambert TV and Radio Reporter

PETER Capaldi has told how he is leaving Doctor Who because he has lost interest in the Time Lord’s unending battle to save the planet.

THE actor, who has starred in the show for three series, appeared to complain about the day-to-day routine of TV, saying he had never done a job where you must ‘turn up every day for ten months’. He added: ‘I can’t think of another way to say, “This could be the end of civilisation as we know it”. With episodic television of any genre, the audience wants the same thing all the time – but the instinct that leads the actor is not about being in a groove.

‘I love this show, but I’ve never done anything where you turn up every day for ten months. I want to always be giving it my best and I don’t think if I stayed on I’d be able to do that.’

He previously called the show ‘a TV factory’ and said actors ‘get wiped out by it’. The 59year-old, who is on the cover of this week’s Radio Times, will leave after a Christmas special. Capaldi said the regeneration of the Doctor, which introduces a new version of the character, will be ‘more complicated than recent ones’.
