New face of the Tory Eurosceptics
Lawyer: Suella Fernandes A 37-YEAR-OLD former barrister was last night elected as the ‘shop steward’ of Tory Eurosceptic MPs.
Suella Fernandes becomes the chairman of the European Research Group, the main Leave group in Parliament. The MP for Fareham pledged her determination to make Britain a ‘fully sovereign trading nation’ again.
She replaces Chelmsford MP Steve Baker who was appointed a minister in the Brexit department last week. Miss Fernandes, the daughter of a Kenyan father and Mauritian mother, is a former barrister and chairman of the Cambridge University Conservative Association.
She said: ‘The next two years will be crucial in the transition of the UK into a fully sovereign trading nation. I don’t believe in a hard Brexit or a soft Brexit; I am passionate about a pro-business and jobsled Brexit which will increase our country’s prosperity.’
She grew up in Wembley and entered the Commons in 2015.
