Should Tim Farron have resigned over his beliefs?

-

THE hounding of Tim Farron over his views on human sexuality indicate just how intolerant and illiberal our society is towards those who do not sign up to the liberal orthodoxy. It also smacks of double standards in that similar questions are not being asked of Muslim MPs and other politicians who share similar views to Mr Farron. ANDREW BROWN, Allestree, Derby. WE SHOULD be ashamed of ourselves that Tim Farron felt the need to step down because he was torn between living as a faithful Christian and serving as a political leader. Many Christian MPs, led by their faith, have helped improve social attitudes, and worthwhile organisations have been set up by Christians who expressed their faith through improving the lives of ordinary people. The fact that the Christian faith has been the foundation of the laws and life of this and other nations for centuries seems to have been forgotten. There should be no place for intolerance and lack of respect for those with whom you might disagree on certain issues. Our faith is the most loving and caring belief system, so we need more Christian leaders, not fewer. J. LONGSTAFF, Buxted, E. Sussex. IT’S a pity Tim Farron didn’t resign at the start of the election campaign when he was being hounded on his Christian beliefs. LIONEL ANDERSON, Peniscola, Spain. WHATEVER happened to the principle: ‘I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it’? ALAN RITCHIE, Belfast. IN TODAY’S Britain, white, English, able-bodied, heterosexual Christians are not allowed an opinion or belief. S. BIRDS, Bury, Gtr Manchester.
