WHO’S READY TO REWRITE HISTORY?

-

SIR MICHAEL STOUTE, the 10-time champion trainer who enjoyed his first royal meeting win with Etienne Gerard in the 1977 Jersey Stakes, needs one win to become the most successful Royal Ascot trainer of all time. He is tied on 75 with the late Sir Henry Cecil. ONE win will see Frankie Dettori move into third place on his own on the all-time royal meeting jockey roll of honour. The Italian is locked on 56 wins with Willie Carson. The two jockeys ahead of him are the late Pat Eddery (73) and Lester Piggott, with a phenomenal 116 successes. AIDAN O’BRIEN, who saddled seven winners here last year, carries Irish hopes. And with up to 15 runners from America, plus a French squad that includes 2016 winner Qemah, the record of 14 wins for overseas raiders — posted last year — looks under threat. GAY KELLEWAY’S win on Sprowston Boy in the Queen Alexandra Stakes 30 years ago remains the only success for a female jockey at the royal meeting. But Josephine Gordon goes into the meeting with a clutch of decent rides headed by Dream Castle, favourite for the Jersey Stakes, and Gymnaste, who is at the top of the betting for the Sandringham Stakes.
