Voice of childhood

When my family moved abroad in the Seventies, one of the few reminders of Britain was my prized Trumpton record.

There was no such thing as children’s Tv in Italy, so I loved hearing the tales of ‘Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub’, narrated by the wonderful Brian Cant, who sadly died this week aged 83.

The man may have gone, but his voice will live on in scratchy recordings like my own, treasured memories of a very British sort of childhood.
