Looks like the future’s in safe hands... meet Cambridge’s rudest revellers yet!

- By Andrew Levy

THE relief Cambridge students feel at the end of their exams is often laid bare for all to see after their summer parties.

Normally this means drunken exuberance on the streets of the historic city, as those who make it through to the morning pose for the infamous ‘survivors’ photo before stumbling home.

But a few students decided to let off steam this year by leaping into the River Cam in various states of undress.

Among the most daring was a blonde who plunged in wearing only skimpy white knickers alongside her friends – a dark-haired girl also in pants and a young man wearing only boxer shorts.

The trio are believed to be from Clare College, which held its May Ball on Mon- day, on the same night as Trinity College and Jesus College. At least three other men larked about in the cold water in their underwear after partying throughout one of the warmest June nights on record.

An onlooker said: ‘They got undressed by the bridge leading from Trinity College at about 5.15am.

‘There were five or six people in the river. The lads all had boxers on.

‘About 20 or 30 students were looking on. Some found it quite amusing but some were slightly shocked.’

Another said: ‘Students jump into the water every year but they keep most of their clothes on, or at least the women do. The university takes a pretty poor view of this sort of behaviour.’ Most revellers stumbled home through the town in their dinner jackets or ballgowns after the all-night bashes.

Around 1,800 attended the Trinity May Ball, which was first held in 1838. The university’s largest college, it has produced 32 Nobel Prize winners.

Bottles of water and parasols were handed out at the start of the white tie function to try and cope with the heat.

After a five-course banquet, drinks were served from a floating bar on the river. There was entertainment from comedians, a casino and jazz tent before fireworks viewed from punts on the historic Backs – while those that were still standing enjoyed a champagne breakfast.

Clare College’s sold- out ball cost up to £200 a head, with a giant ball pit to jump into and entertainment by DJ David Rodigan.
