We need sprinklers
AT THE beginning of 2000, Merseyside Fire Authority started campaigning for sprinklers to be fitted in all schools, factories, nursing homes and high-rise flats.
I represented Merseyside and the North-West on a working group of leaders of fire authorities around the country. We met at Westminster for two years.
At its conclusion, the committee agreed unanimously to recommend to the Government a much wider use of sprinklers. But we were informed any such legislation had to be approved by the European Parliament. My colleagues and I spoke to dozens of MEPs in Brussels and were enthusiastically received. They unanimously agreed to put a suitable recommendation to the European Parliament. Sadly, that was the last we ever heard of it. ALDERMAN EDDIE CLEIN, Liverpool.
AS A landlord, I have to take out public liability insurance on my building, which in the event of a fire, would pay for my tenants to be put up in a hotel for up to a year.
So why did some survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire have to sleep on the floors of church halls?
The council should be giving these families everything they need immediately rather than relying on the generosity, kindness and love of people from the local community. HEATHER CRABTREE, address supplied.
