A fairytale return for Ronaldo? You must be dreaming
THE newsrooms of Britain may be overcome with joy, but it is still very hard to take talk of Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United seriously. He does this from time to time, invites speculation, usually as a means of securing his position at Real Madrid. He certainly didn’t play last season like a man considering his future. He was a tour de force, particularly in the Champions League. Whatever his fiscal complications, it is hard to believe he could fall out of love so quickly. Equally, could United meet Madrid’s financial demands? Ronaldo has lately reinvented himself as a centre forward and remains a prolific goalscorer, exactly what Manchester United need — but at that price, and at 32 years old? It was Richard Dawkins who coined the phrase ‘tooth fairy agnostic’. He described it as someone who concedes that, while they cannot physically disprove the existence of God, thinks it about as likely as there being a tooth fairy. That would be the most accurate approach to Ronaldo and Manchester United right now.
