Driver ‘tried to dodge fine by posing as identical twin’

- By Andrew Levy

AN IDeNTICAL twin pretended to be her sister after she was pulled over by police, a court heard yesterday.

Shannon Taylor was in her sister’s car when she was stopped for driving without insurance, and allegedly posed as her twin Sam.

Taylor, 22, of Colchester, essex, appeared in Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday to deny perverting the course of justice.

She was originally due to appear in court on May 22, but a warrant was issued for her arrest after she did not attend.

Sasha Bailey, defending, told the court that the incident was a ‘misunderstanding’.

‘It’s accepted she was driving the car and [ she] accepts she was stopped,’ Miss Bailey said. ‘It’s the conversation that then happened – it can only be a misunderstanding.’ Taylor, a care assistant said that she hadn’t realised her car insurance policy had run out on May 18, instead of May 28.

She posted comments on her Facebook page about the incident in Colchester on May 27 last year to insist she is innocent.

The only reference she made to police about her sister, she claims, was to explain she was driving her car, a Vauxhall Corsa. ‘I never said I was my sister [ and] never intended to pervert the course of justice’ she wrote.

‘In fact the moment we realised my sister got the fine we rang the courts together to change the fine into my name. The confusion was the fact that we are twins and the car belonged to Sam,’ she added.

Judge David Turner QC adjourned the case and said a trial would be held later this year.
