Today’s poem

-

It won’t be easy, you’ll think it strange. When I try to explain, why I bought the car. Yet I still need your cash, after all that I’ve done. You won’t believe me. All you will see is the missing TV. And the space where the telly should be. But I bought the car ’specially for you. I had to let it happen. I couldn’t change. Couldn’t stay all my life, behind that wheel. Looking out of the windscreen at the rust-ridden wings. So I chose freedom. Running around trying everything new. But nothing impressed me at all. I never expected it to. Don’t cry for my old Cortina. The truth is, it rarely started. All through the wild days. The trip to Dover. I should have listened, and bought the Rover. And as for fortune, I’ve lost it all. I bought the new car, on a whim. Though it seemed at the time, it was all I desired. ’Twas an illusion and not the solution to getting to work. The answer was here all the time. I love you and hope you love me. Don’t cry for my old Cortina.

D. Cox, Maidenhead, Berks.
