5 THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THIS TWENTY20 SERIES

- PAUL NEWMAN

1 ENGLAND have unearthed a wrist-spinner of real promise. So excited are they by Mason Crane that they are already talking of him as an Ashes prospect and you could see why. He was very good on his debut in Southampton and kept his cool yesterday to survive an onslaught from AB de Villiers and then claim his man. Adil Rashid might have a battle on his hands.

2 ENGLAND have also found another talented seamer. At Taunton on Friday, Tom Curran stepped up to the highest level as if to the manor born and he was mightily impressive again. The older Curran, 22, is another who could play Test cricket and is not even meant to be as promising as little brother Sam, 19.

3 AN old ’un can be a good ’un. Dawid Malan has had to wait a long time for his chance and it might be asked why a 29-year-old is only just making his debut. The Middlesex man soon dispelled that with a first appearance of rare assurance. An ageing star is born.

4 NOT all the newcomers made their mark. Liam Livingstone is a combative Cumbrian with a reputation as a fierce hitter. But he will return to Lancashire with a bit to ponder after wasting his chance to take England home on debut and then falling first ball yesterday. He will be back, but he now knows what a big step up international cricket can be.

5 THE England captain is his own man. Eoin Morgan is never afraid to do things his way, as he showed by letting his team go to Bangladesh without him. Now he left himself out of a series decider to give Livingstone another chance — but this big call just didn’t feel like the correct one.
