Why is BBC spending your cash on ‘glitter breasts’ video?
THE BBC has been accused of spending licence fee payers’ money on ‘soft porn’ after it filmed a woman showing how to put glitter on her breasts.
Its ‘Glitter Boobs’ video (right) shows a young woman silently spray-painting her naked torso, and then applying jewelled stickers over her nipples.
Many young women were seen opting for a similar look at last week’s Glastonbury festival.
The clip, posted on a BBC Facebook page under the heading ‘Shake your t**s it’s Friday!’, was still circulating yesterday. It was also posted on YouTube.
MPs and campaigners questioned why the BBC was showing such content.
Labour MP Chi Onwurah said she feared it was ‘ a desperate attempt to demonstrate relevance without considering the consequences’. Helen Lewington, of Mediawatch-UK, warned: ‘Parents trust the BBC and may not realise that BBC The Social By Katherine Rushton Media and Technology Editor contains content which is inappropriate ... It means children can easily access videos like this and others that verge on soft porn.’
Viewers were also shocked, with one commenting: ‘It is naive to think that women are being empowered by this.’
Another said: ‘This really strikes me as inappropriate content.’
The minute-long video was made by BBC Scotland and posted on its The Social channel. Other clips include ‘Kilted Yoga’, which sees two men wearing nothing but kilts reveal their buttocks.
A spokesman said the ‘overwhelming response’ had been positive, adding: ‘The Social has a specific remit to create content aimed at 18-34-year-olds and the topics covered are led by our audience. In this case, the content was all produced by young women and aimed at their peers.’
