MUIR STILL AIMING FOR DOUBLE

- LAURA WILLIAMSON

LAURA MUIR remains on track to double up in the 1500metres and 5,000m at this summer’s athletics World Championships in London after recovering from a fractured bone in her left foot. The 24-year-old stopped any weight-bearing activities when a scan on June 1 revealed she had suffered a stress fracture weeks — possibly months — earlier, but began running again on June 16 with no ill effects. Muir (above) will miss next weekend’s British trials in Birmingham as a precaution, but British Athletics director Neil Black’s prediction she has only a ‘one per cent’ chance of doubling up at London 2017 appears wide of the mark. Her coach Andy Young said: ‘Laura resumed running pain-free on June 16 and the following week returned to the track, which likewise was immediately back on a world class pace. ‘With such a short lay-off, Laura should be able to compete for a medal in the 5,000m as well as the 1500m.’
