Gosden’s Derby jockey puzzle
CRACKSMAN will head the British challenge for Saturday’s Irish Derby at the Curragh, but trainer John Gosden is yet to secure a replacement for injured jockey Frankie Dettori. The Italian missed last week’s Royal Ascot with a broken bone in his left shoulder and five of his likely mounts won. Dettori looks like being sidelined for at least another two weeks. One option for Cracksman, who finished third in the Epsom Derby, could be French jockey Olivier Peslier, successful on Coronet for Gosden in the Ribblesdale Stakes. Derby fourth Eminent looks unlikely to be supplemented for the Curragh as trainer Martyn Meade targets the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on Saturday week, where rivals could include Derby runner-up Cliffs Of Moher and St James’s Palace Stakes winner Barney Roy. Meade’s son and assistant Freddie said: ‘We think the track and distance will suit him better at Sandown.’ Epsom trainer Laura Mongan has been dealt a cruel blow after Harbour Law sustained a tendon injury in the Ascot Gold Cup. The 2016 St Leger winner could be out of action for a year.
