More UK troops for Kabul
BRITAIN is sending 85 extra troops to Afghanistan. They will join the 500 UK soldiers already there from the start of next year.
The deployment comes after Nato asked for additional help to support training in the country. The British troops will work in non-combat roles mentoring Kabul’s army, air force and police, as well as providing support to security forces. Hundreds of IS fighters are in Afghanistan, with more expected as they are pushed out of Iraq and Syria.
Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon will say today: ‘Keeping Afghanistan from becoming a haven for transnational terrorists helps keep our streets safe too.’
