AFTER World War II, a married nurse (Caitriona Balfe) falls through time and finds herself in 1740s Scotland, in the midst of a rebellion against the British crown. What follows in this U.S. drama is a lavish mix of adventure and romance, with a stirring soundtrack. If you’d like to jump ahead, the first two seasons are available, on demand, on Amazon Prime.

CHILLY ENCOUNTERS Alaska Haunting, 10pm, Quest Red

EERILY gripping new ‘true haunting’ series, with a narrator who treats every scene like an Eighties movie trailer. The first story involves a grandmothe­r who loves to play the piano, a practice that becomes her ‘one solace’ as spooky events engulf her family. (Freeview 38, Sky 162, Virgin 215)

KNOCKOUT FILMS Boxing At The Movies: Kings Of The Ring, 11pm, BBC4

DEEP but succinct history from Danny Leigh, who talks about Raging Bull, Kid Galahad (the one with Bogart) and a Thomas Edison short from 1894 that features boxing cats — and looks eerily like a YouTube clip. His themes include racism, masculinit­y and life after the ring.

FREEVIEW CLASSIC The Deer Hunter, 11.05pm, ITV4

REWARDED with five Oscars, Michael Cimino’s powerful and chilling drama is a high point of the decade’s cinema output. It follows three smalltown friends (Robert De Niro, Christophe­r Walken and John Savage) before, during and after service in Vietnam.
