Sainsbury’s sets off fuel price war

-

A PETROL price war broke out yesterday as the ‘big four’ supermarkets all slashed their prices at the pumps.

Sainsbury’s was the first grocer to reduce fuel costs – cutting the price of both petrol and diesel by 2p per litre across all of its 309 forecourts in the UK.

Rivals Morrisons and Tesco were quick to follow suit ahead of the weekend.

Meanwhile, Asda confirmed customers would save 1p a litre when filling up at one of their 307 UK forecourts.

A 2p cut will slash £1.10 off the price of filling up a typical 55-litre car. Simon Williams of the RAC said: ‘This is great news for motorists and we hope it will spark a fuel cut frenzy on forecourts across the country ... The outlook for lower-priced fuel over the weeks ahead is positive.’
