‘HERE, a sheer hulk, lies poor Tom Bowling/The darling of our crew.’ The 18th-century songwriter Charles Dibdin wrote the moving ballad Tom Bowling in memory of his sailor brother, who died at sea. The tenor Mark Padmore includes it in a selection of traditional English songs arranged by Benjamin Britten (pictured), for RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERT (1PM) in this last of four concerts given at this year’s Aldeburgh Festival.

A GIANT fence divides a city; on one side, the weather is foul, the children are obese, and homelessness and early death are the norm. On the other side, the sun shines, and cosmetically improved humans live long and affluent lives. Josie Long, Liam Williams and Pippa Haywood star in this dystopian comedy drama DANGEROUS VISIONS:

PERIMETER (RADIO 4,

2.15PM) about a brother and sister who find themselves taken from grim poverty to live on the sunny side of the fence. An inventive piece of radio.

THE first heat of this year’s radio comedy awards was recorded at the Up The Creek comedy club in Greenwich. Nish Kumar is the presenter, and the judges are Louisa Omielan, Simon Nicholls and Steve Bennett. Ten stand-up acts are on the bill for this year’s BBC NEW COMEDY AWARD 2017 (RADIO 4 EXTRA, 10.30PM), and the comedy — if previous years are anything to go by — will be quirky and original.
