Camber families’ fury over lifeguards
THE families of seven men who drowned at a popular beach yesterday said lifeguards would have saved their lives.
Five young Londoners, aged 18 to 27 and of Sri Lankan origin, died playing volleyball in the sea at Camber Sands in East Sussex last August. A month earlier, Mohit Dupar, 36, died trying to rescue Gustavo Silva Da Cruz, a 19-yearold Brazilian who also perished.
Senior coroner Alan Craze ruled in Hastings the deaths were misadventure and it was unclear whether lifeguards would have helped.
But a relative insisted last night: ‘These lives were lost because of the lack of lifeguards.’
The beach – near Rye – is now patrolled.
