ASK THE PHARMACIST
Q HOW often should I wash a pill dispenser? A PILL dispensers need to be washed to prevent bacteria colonising in them or any leftover tablet residue adding to the next dose, explains Anshu Bhimbat of LloydsPharmacy, in Buckinghamshire.
Wash them at the end of the cycle — that means weekly or monthly, depending on the type of dispenser.
Use a non-abrasive cleaner; if the dispenser becomes chipped or damaged it can cause tablet particles to break off, which can lower the dose of medication,
Make sure you dry the dispenser thoroughly with a soft cloth, too, as moisture can degrade the tablets.
Many pill dispensers are now dishwasher safe, but always check the packaging.
The same applies for pill cutters — a device a bit like a pencil sharpener, which cuts pills in half — and pill crushers.
