SIR Tom Stoppard’s 80th birthday bash at the weekend was doubtless a stylish, soignee and extremely generous affair. The champagne flowed and the conversation was sparkling, too.
But what really made the party sing was the playwright’s guest-list with its host of right-on luvvies.
There was a bizarrely dressed Jude Law, looking tiny next to his leggy girlfriend, and Nigella Lawson, who seems to be vanishing before our eyes.
Stephen Fry was red-faced in the sunshine of the Chelsea garden venue, while BBC arts grandee Alan Yentob looked careworn by the embarrassments over his involvement in a failed charity.
Jeremy Irons and Damian Lewis looked actorly in their different outfits, while Channel 4’s Tory-basherin-chief Jon Snow went collarless. Other guests included Ralph Fiennes, Sir Michael Gambon, director Trevor Nunn and rocker Pete Townshend.
If the collective noun for luvvies is a ‘love-in’, then Sir Tom’s party – organised by his wife Sabrina Guinness – was a paragon of the type...
