Atletico move for Costa

- By MATT BARLOW

ATLETICO MADRID are preparing a move for Diego Costa as the clock ticks down to Chelsea’s first day of pre-season training. Antonio Conte’s squad are due to report back at their Surrey base on Monday, including Costa unless he is close to a move. The Brazil-born Spain striker has made it clear he will only consider a move back to his former club Atletico Madrid. Reports in Spain last night suggested a deal was close but the clubs have been a long way apart on the valuation of the player since the preliminary talks. Atletico have been unwilling to pay more than £20million for a player with two years on his contract and who has been told by Conte that he is no longer part of his first-team plans. Chelsea were determined to dig in for a full return on what they paid in 2014 but they are not in a strong negotiating position.
