Killer chef’s biblical taunt at victims’ families

- By Neil Sears

A BULLY who killed two girlfriends five years apart made a sinister threat yesterday to their families as he was jailed.

Arriving in handcuffs to be sentenced to life, Robert Trigg, 52, was asked what he had to say to the relatives of victims Caroline Devlin and Susan Nicholson.

The 15st chef replied: ‘They should be in here, not me. Isaiah 50 verse 11.’

From the Old Testament, it warns those who ‘light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches ... will lie down in torment’. The families had fought for police to re-investigate after they initially believed Trigg’s claims that he woke up on each occasion to find the women dead.

But he killed Miss Devlin, 35, in 2006 with a blow to the head and suffocated Miss Nicholson, 52, in 2011. Trigg, of Worthing, West Sussex, did not react as Mrs Justice Ingrid Simler jailed him for a minimum of 25 years for the manslaughter of Miss Devlin and the murder of Miss Nicholson.

At Lewes Crown Court, East Sussex, she said it was thanks to the ‘dogged’ fight of Miss Nicholson’s parents, now in their 80s, that he was finally behind bars for the ‘senseless and brutal’ deaths.
