Why Judy Murray left her sons’ dad out of memoirs

-

THERE is no love lost between tennis matriarch Judy Murray and her ex husband, William Murray, father of Wimbledon champion Andy and his brother and fellow player, doubles champion Jamie.

For tennis coach Judy, 57, who helped guide her sons to stardom, has pointedly omitted all mention of her ex’s name from her new memoirs, Knowing The Score: My Family And Our Tennis Story — only calling him somewhat tersely ‘the boys’ father’.

Judy was married to Scottish newsagent manager William for 25 years before their reportedly ‘acrimonious’ divorce in 2005. She says of the omis- sion in her book, which came out last month: ‘I wrote it as a memoir of tennis, not an autobiography. I haven’t named very many people in the book. It’s more about me sharing what I had to go through.’

But despite the public view of Andy and Jamie having a closer relationship with Judy, the pair actually stayed with their father after Judy walked out. William said in 2009 that he ‘kept the family home and looked after them for the next four or five years. A lot of people don’t realise that because the story isn’t portrayed that way. That’s fine by me because the boys know what happened.’
