Corbyn tackles the weighty issue of the day ... by picking his favourite to win Love Island

- By Larisa Brown

HE was once dubbed ‘the Sexpot Trot’ because of his colourful love life.

And it seems Jeremy Corbyn has not forgotten his romantic side.

The Labour leader yesterday urged supporters to vote for a former pop star to win the reality TV show Love Island.

He said Marcel Somerville, once part of the boyband Blazin’ Squad, ‘needs some TLC’ after heated exchanges with his new girlfriend. She was angry about him kissing another girl twice during a racy game in a villa. The ITV2 show follows a group of barely dressed twenty- somethings who pole-dance, play risqué games and have sex in front of the cameras.

Mr Corbyn, 68, who has been married three times and had a fling with shadow home secretary Diane Abbott, called for fans to back Somerville.

He told The Tab website: ‘I haven’t been watching it, but I’d advise that Marcel needs a vote. We should give him a vote. He needs a bit of, shall I say, TLC.’ He made the comments as he was visiting an apprenticeships college in Barnet, north London.

Some of Love Island’s 1.5million viewers were thrilled to see the politician’s support.

One wrote on Twitter: ‘If Jeremy Corbyn and Marcel became friends my life would be made.’ Another posted: ‘Y’all even Jeremy Corbyn is voting for Marcel #LoveIsland.’

Despite its explicit content, a surprising part of the show’s success has been its popularity among those in the ABC1 demographic – the upper and middle classes – who make up 50.6 per cent of viewers.
