Anarchists unleash second day of chaos on Hamburg
ANARCHISTS unleashed another wave of violence in Hamburg yesterday in an attempt to bring the G20 summit to a standstill.
Around 20 cars were set ablaze as antiestablishment protesters lobbed Molotov cocktails, rocks and iron rods at police, with more than 160 officers injured.
Police were forced to use water cannon on the crowds after the initially peaceful protests became increasingly vicious yesterday, following similar clashes during Thursday’s ‘Welcome to Hell’ march.
While 15,000 officers were sent to protect the G20 leaders, the ‘day of disobedience’ saw Melania Trump holed up inside her official residence for much of the day.
Concerns over the demonstrators meant the First Lady was refused security clearance to join other leaders’ spouses, including the Prime Minister’s husband Philip May, for a boat trip.
She later posted a message on Twitter warning the city’s residents to ‘stay safe’, and said she was thinking of those who were hurt during protests.
Hundreds of masked marchers from across Europe have left a trail of destruction as the world’s most powerful leaders descended on the German port city.
Yesterday’s summit ended in chaos as a visit by leaders to a new concert hall was overshadowed by violent clashes between protesters Prime Minister and and police Donald outside. Trump listened As the to Beethoven in the heavily-fortified Elbphilharmonie hall, riot police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse thou- sands of activists determined to soil the symbolic event. It came after officials said 1,000 members of a notorious activist faction known as the ‘black bloc’ had disguised themselves among the crowds dur- ing Thursday’s march, with many wreaking havoc throughout the day yesterday. Last night they said that 70 arrests had been made, while 15 suspected anarchists remained in custody.
