IT’S 1973 ALL OVER AGAIN!

-

TRIUMPH for Andy Murray and Jo Konta yesterday means Britain have quarter-finalists in both the men’s and women’s singles at Wimbledon for the first time since 1973. Edward Heath was in Downing Street, Sunderland were the FA Cup holders and Slade topped the charts with Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me when Roger Taylor and Virginia Wade reached the last eight. Wade was knocked out by Evonne Goolagong in her quarter-final but Taylor came through a five-set battle with Bjorn Borg in his last-eight match, before losing to eventual champion Jan Kodes in the semi-finals. Not since 1967 — when Taylor and Ann Jones reached the semi-finals — has Britain had players in both the men’s and women’s last four.
